Content Warning: Grief, Loss
Poem by Alexander Fosnaugh
If you're lucky,
You'll wake up at 6:53
Half confused, still tired with gunky eyes
You said hi to him in your dream
Made sure to hold him tight
You dreamt of the things you wish you did
Regret swirls in your gut when you realize it wasn't real
You'll stay awake for a while
And at 7:15, you'll wish you were asleep
Wish you had the energy for the day ahead
You know seeing your family will be hard
You love them, but it's not the same anymore
You need to see them today, if only for their sake
At 7:37
You'll finally decide you should sleep
After you write for a while
Maybe more time dreaming is what you need
It's not real but he is in your dreams
The love you feel in his arms is real
At 7:42 you notice something new,
The sun is pouring through the window
Catching on the fabric of the curtains
Making them glow like a halo
Illuminating the walls with yellow bright as a smile
The sun is painting the ceiling with broad brushstrokes,
hoping you catch a glimpse
At 7:45 you'll marvel at its beauty
You'll remember your fondest memories
Some, you can't make anymore
Find a reason to stay awake
Even if it's only to look a little while
It's the most full your heart has been for days
At 7:56 it won't be as bright
The yellow still illuminates the room
You know it'll end soon
So watch and note the time
At 7:58 It'll nearly be gone
It's moments away from passing on
It only has a short amount of time on this planet
At 7:59 It'll only faintly be there
Fading before your eyes
The once glowing curtains hold a fraction of color they used to
You know it'll be over soon
You wish it wasn't
At 8:00 it's all back to bland
Why did it leave?
The most beautiful things end the quickest
At 8:03 you'll wonder if he's looking down
Hoping you saw the sun today
Wishing you had more time
Every minute that passes is a new adventure
But you know he still had plenty of adventures left
Plenty of people left to love
He was ripped away unjustly
At 8:18 you finish writing
Then you go back to sleep
Hoping to see him again
A few days later, at 7:50
You see the sun again,
He's waving from the other room
You smile, because it's all you can do
And you hope he knows,
He's always welcome to stay awhile.
